SUPPLY CHAIN COSTS CAN BE 45% OF A HOSPITAL’S OPERATING COST.

In 2011, Global Healthcare Exchange LLC (GHX) published a white paper entitled “Applying Supply Chain Best Practices from Other Industries to Healthcare”. In it they identify supply chain costs as one of the largest and fastest growing operational expenses for most hospitals and healthcare organizations. They contend that if “the price paid for products along with the labor and overhead costs to manage them, supply chain represents 40 to 45 percent of a hospital or healthcare system operating expense, second only to labor.”

That’s a big number.
